‘Next generation edition’ of The Witcher 3 in development

Well here’s a nice announcement to cap off the work week – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has a new version in the pipelines called the “next generation edition” that will be coming to the new generation of consoles, as well as PC.

“Developed to take advantage of powerful video-game hardware, the next generation edition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for PC, Xbox Series X, and PlayStation 5 will feature a range of visual and technical improvements — including ray tracing and faster loading times — across the base game, both expansions, and all extra content,” reads an announcement from CD Projekt.

This version of the game is currently in development and does not have a release date yet. We wouldn’t be surprised if it launches day one for the new consoles. That being said we don’t have a solid release date for either, with the consoles from Sony and Microsoft still pencilled in for a holiday 2020 release.

For those burned by Control, which requires re-buying the game to access the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports, the next generation edition will be free. If you own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on PC, PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you get it as a free update.

For those who haven’t bought the game yet, for some crazy reason, it can also be had as a standalone version.

This is rather fantastic news as it means that returning players won’t need to spend a dime and those new to the franchise can get in without the need to buy the previous-gen version.

Back in June CD Projekt gave away GOG copies of the game to those who own the game already, so the company is not at all a stranger to pro-consumer moves when it comes to its beloved title.

More information about the next generation edition will be released in the future, likely closer to the release of the new consoles and the end of the year.
