Dimension Data celebrates 25 years of Saturday School

Earlier this year Dimension Data launched its Saturday School programme in Port Elizabeth, but today the programme celebrates an important milestone – its 25th anniversary.

The programme sees 100 learners a year from Grades 11 and 12 attending additional tutoring and educational support sessions for Mathematics, Physical Science, English, Life Sciences, Computer Studies, Coding, Leadership and Entrepreneurial Skills.

“The Saturday School is our flagship CSR [corporate social responsibility] programme because of the year-on-year success it has shown, not just in the results achieved but also with the impact on the lives of those who join us for the programme,” explains Dimension Data chief executive officer, Grant Bodley.

The firm reports that over the 25 years it has maintained a consistent 100 percent pass rate, as well as 93.6 percent university exemption.

But how has Saturday School continued – if at all – during lockdown?

The good news is that the 2020 cohort are still able to participate in the programme with help from some tech.

Dimension Data says that with help from mobile connectivity, the students and teachers have been communicating through WhatsApp.

“We don’t do this because it looks good on a shareholder report or tells a good story. We do it because we believe a business needs to justify its place and role in society by mentoring the citizens of tomorrow as part of doing ‘good’ business,” states Bodley.

As part of Saturday School, learners are able to apply for the Dimension Data Graduate Acceleration Programme as well the firm’s bursary programme. This not only secures a learner’s study path for the future, but many learners end up working at Dimension Data.
