CD Projekt reiterates: no microtransactions for Cyberpunk 2077

Recently rumours about microtransactions have been swirling around for Cyberpunk 2077 but, thankfully, CD Projekt has commented on the issue with reassurance of previous promises of no additional purchases.

“Nothing changed. Cyberpunk 2077 is a single player game with zero microtransactions. One single purchase. No tricks. Don’t believe the clickbait,” reads a tweet from the game’s official account.

The “clickbait” in reference there is several news stories based on this earnings report (PDF) which does, in fairness, mention microtransactions. Many outlets picked up on this an especially the phrase “we won’t be aggressive” when it comes to these types of payments.

What wasn’t mentioned by those outlets, or at least wasn’t made clear enough, is that those microtransactions were in reference to the multiplayer part of Cyberpunk 2077 which is being worked on and will be a its own release after the main game. It is this multiplayer that will have the additional purchasing options.

“Cyberpunk multiplayer/online, which is a separate project, will have some microtransactions, but we said that a year ago already. Like always, expect us treating your money with respect,” the official account adds.

That earnings report also mentions microtransactions in terms of the upcoming augmented reality (AR) app The Witcher: Monster Slayer. This AR game will release on iOS and Android for free and will be supported by in-app purchases which are common in the mobile gaming market.

For now though it seems that CD Projeckt just needed to remind everyone that, while Cyberpunk 2077 promises to be a special game in many ways, its pricing model will be very traditional: a single $60 purchase. Even this has to be clarified in a public way, as some next generation games are eyeing the $70 mark for AAA on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Cyberpunk 2077 releases on 19th November. After several changes in that release date it has been stated that no more delays will be happening.
