Xbox Series S announced with first next-gen price – $299

For a while now seemingly legit rumours have been floating around about an “Xbox Series S” that would be a smaller and cheaper version of the Xbox One X. Now, finally, it has been officially announced.

“???? Let’s make it official! Xbox Series S | Next-gen performance in the ˢᵐᵃˡˡᵉˢᵗ Xbox ever. $299 (ERP). Looking forward to sharing more! Soon. Promise,” tweeted the verified Xbox Twitter account.

This announcement is important for two reasons: firstly is seems that Microsoft has decided to reveal this because of the vast amount of leaks, and this is the first official price for next-gen console hardware that we’ve gotten.

Ever since the reveals of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X we’ve been waiting to find out how much each would cost. The accepted logic here is that both Sony and Microsoft were waiting for the other to announce the price, so that it could adjust its RRP accordingly.

By revealing the price of the Series S today, Microsoft has put a solid dollar amount on next-gen consoles.

At the time of writing $299 converts to around R5 023, which seems like an amazing price, but it should be taken with a grain of salt.

US prices are usually shown without tax added on and, even when tax is factored in, South Africans never get on-the-shelf pricing anywhere close to that. We learned that recently when the Nvidia 3000 series graphics cards were priced in the country and nearly double the US RRP.

While Microsoft has promised more information soon, we can look back at some leaks for more since they are retrospectively more trustworthy now.

Windows Central reports that the Series X will cost $499 (~R8 381) and both consoles will launch on 10th November, lining up with the “holiday 2020” window for the next-gen consoles.

As for the differences between the two consoles the S will be much smaller than the X. As for performance the S will be a lower spec and will not have a disc drive to keep costs down. Both, whoever, will be able to play the same games.

As Microsoft has now shown its hand we should expect Sony to finally reveal the price of its two PlayStation 5 consoles.
