Yesterday we saw the number of new cases for COVID-19 in South drop to a curiously low 854. As it turns out, those figures may have simply been an anomaly, with the latest statistics from the National Department of Health (NDoH) recording 1 079 new cases over the past 24 hours.
This figure is more in keeping with the numbers we’ve seen of late, but it is still relatively low, so there may be cause for optimism that there will be no new waves of infections on the horizon.
As for how many cases of COVID-19 in South Africa have been recorded to date, the NDoH confirms that the current figure is sitting at 640 441. Shifting to the number of recoveries, those remain quite high, with 567 729 recoveries recorded to date. This translates to a recovery rate of 88.64 percent.
Along with the number of new infections, the amount of fatalities has climbed too. Over the past 24 hours, 82 deaths have been reported, bringing the total to date to 15 086.
