New Hyrule Warriors game is a Breath of the Wild prequel

Koei Tecmo and Nintendo have teamed up once again for another Hyrule Warriors game subtitled Age of Calamity which takes place a hundred years before The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

“In Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity… players will be transported to the time before the Great Calamity happened, participating in epic battles against a backdrop of memorable locations in Hyrule before they were destroyed. The game stars familiar faces from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild like Link and Zelda, as well as other recognisable characters like the four Champions, who will be playable for the very first time in the Hyrule Warriors series,” reads a press release sent to us.

As you can see from the two trailers released so far, the gameplay here is very much in line with other Koei Tecmo warrior games, including the original Hyrule Warriors which got a Definitive Edition Switch port back in 2018.

The gameplay of “one versus a thousand” is still present here.

Looking at those trailers and, if we didn’t know any better, we’d say that it looks a lot like a game built on top of Breath of the Wild.

We don’t mean that in a meta story sense, but rather a technical one. We wouldn’t be surprised if Age of Calamity is built in Breath of the Wild’s engine, or at least borrows some of its tech.

Koei Tecmo producer Yosuke Hayashi states in the video below that the two companies are working closely on this title too.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity launches on 20th November exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.

A store page for the game already exists on the Nintendo eShop with the lone pre-order bonues being the Lucky Ladle, a weapon for Link. All that’s been released for this bonus is this rather low res picture of the kitchen utensil weapon.

For those who want to spend even more money, amiibo of the Four Champions are also being re-released to coincide with this new game featuring them.
