The Huawei MateBook D – The best notebook deal on the market

How much should a premium notebook cost? R20k? R30k? More?

Huawei does not think so, which is why the consumer electronics manufacturer recently launched the MateBook D series of notebooks in South Africa. Available locally in two flavours – the MateBook D 14 and MateBook D 15 – each denoting the respective size of the displays onboard.

While having two differently sized notebooks would not be anything to write home about, the thing that sets the MateBook D series different from other lineups is the fact that both models retail for the same recommended price in South Africa – R13 499.

Add to this that Huawei has kitted these notebooks out in powerful components that translate into an equally impressive on-device performance, and it is hard to find better value for money when it comes to the premium notebook space in South Africa.

Still unconvinced and wondering what the MateBook D series is sporting to make it the best offer around?

Let’s start with the displays. As aforementioned the MateBook D 14 has a 14″ IPS screen, and the MateBook D 15 features a 15.6″ panel, but crucially, both serve up crisp and vibrant FullHD resolutions.

Moving to the internals, the same AMD Ryzen 5 3500U processor is found on each of these notebooks. This is paired with Radeon Vega 8 graphics built into the processor and a generous 8GB of DDR4 RAM to ensure things tick over very smoothly.

The screen real estate on either notebook, combined with the powerful components, also makes them well suited for watching and enjoying videos or movies, as well as working via Windows 10 during the nine to five (and beyond if needed).

Speaking of which, Huawei has not shied away when it comes to the batteries on the MateBook D series. Interestingly the smaller D 14 has a larger 56Wh battery compared to the 42Wh version found in the D 15. This translates to a battery life of up to 9.5 hours and 6.3 hours respectively.

While all of the above would be enough to make the Huawei MateBook D notebooks stand out from the crowd, this manufacturer has also included a number of innovative features aimed at ease of use and collaboration in particular.

To that end a USB Type-C port takes care of the charging, which is to be expected from a modern notebook. Added to this are a bevy of port options including USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI and a 3.5mm headphone jack. As such, those concerned with living the dongle life when buying a new notebook have nothing to worry about in that department with these Huawei devices.

There is the added benefit of a power button that integrates a fingerprint sensor too, as well as Huawei’s own multi-screen collaboration and OneHop functionality, which makes switching between your Huawei notebook to your Huawei smartphone and vice versa as simple and easy. This makes the MateBook D series perfectly designed for those multitaskers whose entire tech ecosystem is Huawei-focused.

With value for money hard to come by, and the increasing need to have a powerful notebook on-hand for the new normal of working from home, the Huawei MateBook D series should be your first port of call when considering a new notebook.
