Borderlands 3 included in long list of free next-gen upgrades

Developer Gearbox has announced that Borderlands 3 will get a free next-gen upgrade for those who already own the game on the current generation PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Not only does this mean that more people will be able to play the game on new hardware, but there’s also new features in store for the beefier consoles.

“We’re excited to confirm that Borderlands 3 will be playable on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PlayStation 5, with the Series X and PS5 supporting 4K resolution at 60fps in single-player. With the power of the new consoles comes new features, including additional ways to enjoy local play: three- and four-player splitscreen will be available on the next-gen consoles,” reads an announcement from Gearbox.

In addition two player vertical splitscreen is coming too. This feature will be included in the next-gen ports, but will also be added as a free update to the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as a free update.

Those worried about restarting their games from nothing can also put that fear to bed, as save files and DLC will carry over to the new consoles too. This is good news for those who haven’t stopped playing the game since it launched a year ago.

Borderlands 3 joins a host of other games also receiving a free next-gen version for current gen owners. Both of CD Projekt’s darlings – Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 – will offer this, as well as others such as Doom Eternal, Avengers, Destiny 2 and many more. It seems that this is the interim period norm and games which are charging for the privilege (cough cough Control) draw the ire of the community.
