“Cheater Island” isn’t some new reality show featuring couples who cheat on each other, but is instead a measure implemented into Fall Guys to deal with people trying to win through nefarious means.

The official Fall Guys Twitter account recently revealed the complex story about Cheater Island. The full thread starts with this tweet and goes on for a while, so we’ll summarise.

The “island” is what many games have already implemented: a cheater lobby. The point of this kind of lobby is to make cheaters play against each other instead of outright banning them. As this happens without their knowledge, cheaters can make each other miserable instead of poisoning the regular playerbase.

This sneaky approach also has the benefit of cheaters maybe not recognising what has happened (they’re not the smartest bunch after all) so they stick around with their own kind instead of making new accounts.

The Fall Guys developers Mediatonic gathered data about suspected cheaters before dumping them onto the island.

“It was a magical place where cheaters could happily compete against themselves for the Cheater’s Crown…Literally just a normal crown but tainted with a hollow feeling of guilt and regret,” reads the tale of the island.

Cheater Island didn’t spin up immediately as Mediatonic was lax with the flags for cheating to ensure that no non-cheaters were grouped in.

The developer then had to secretly patch the game and change the flags for catching cheaters, in an effort to stay one step ahead. One early sign of being caught was starting a match and falling endlessly out of the map.

At this point it was also why Steam Family Sharing was disabled.

You can see some videos of suspected Cheater Island games on this page but, unfortunately, it has now been closed down. Those who have been flagged as cheaters will now simply be unable to log into the game.

Mediatonic has now sought help from Epic and the game’s next update will have a major focus on catching and banning cheaters, instead of simply putting them in their own servers.
