Add Rocket league to your Epic Games library for a $10 coupon

Back in July we learned that the beloved RC car soccer game Rocket League would become free to play. Now we know that this will happen next week, 23rd September.

This move will bring more change to the game aside from a 100 percent discount. Rocket league will launch on the Epic Games Store (EGS), a new season will begin for competitive play, game-wide challenges will kick off and more.

Those who already bought the game will be treated to “Legacy Status” which will give them access to a host of DLC and cosmetic items.

Even those who have paid in the past will be tempted to add the game to their libraries, however.

“If you add Rocket League to your library between September 23 and October 23 you will receive a $10 EGS coupon that is redeemable on games and add-ons $14.99 and up. Plus, once you download and launch the game, you’ll instantly get two new items in your inventory: Sun Ray Boost and Hot Rocks Trail!” reads an announcement from developer Psyonix.

Before the move to free there is an update coming today which will allow for cross-platform progression (detailed by the devs here), legacy items, Support-A-Creator and a host of small additions like quick chats and a new bot difficulty. These changes will be more appreciated by older players it seems.

To mark the occasion of all this Rocket League news we also have a new “cinematic trailer” which is just a CG showcase for the game.

The move to a free to play model should ensure a healthy injection of new players into a game that originally launched in July 2015, but it has come with a host of bad news and worries.

Firstly is the fact that the game will be delisted on Steam when 23rd September comes around. Owners of the game will still be able to play the title and receive official updates, but the Epic Games Store will become the only place for new players to get it.

Secondly there’s the worries about cheating. No purchases necessary means that cheaters can simply hop into a new account for no money if their existing one gets banned for foul play. We’ll have to wait and see if this fear comes to pass.
