Fujifilm reveals new Instax Square SQ1 set for October release

No manufacturer has doubled down as hard on instant cameras than Fujifilm. The Japanese company has revealed a number of instant cameras in recent years under its Instax brand, and for good reason, given the popularity of the devices, especially here in South Africa. Nostalgia has been tapped into once again as the latest addition to the Instax range is the new Square SQ1.

This latest offering follows a very similar design to the Square SQ6 that Fujifilm brought to market a few years ago, and now offers a simpler offering that yields square prints, which are 1.5 times the size of the Instax mini versions.

In terms of what is on offer for the Square SQ1, Fujifilm says the new instant camera serves up automatic exposure and a one-touch selfie mode among its features.

The SQ1 is also fairly lightweight given its plastic construction, weighing in at 390g sans battery, strap, and film pack. Added to this is a relatively slim body at 57.5mm, with the onboard lens extending outwards from the body once switched on. There’s also no screen at the back, with the optical viewfinder used to compose images instead.

Once you’re ready to snap, Fujifilm says it takes approximately 90 seconds to develop a print. Speaking of which, the Square SQ1 will only take Instax’s branded SQUARE film (comes 10 in a pack), with the two two CR2/DL CR2 lithium batteries (included) powering the instant camera lasting roughly 30 prints.

As such, there will be some additional elements for consumers to consider on this model.

For now no local price or precise launch date has been issued by Fujifilm SA, but the Square SQ1 is expected to retail in the region of €130 (~R2 521) in Terracotta Orange, Glacier Blue and Chalk White, making them more expensive than the SQ6.
