Horizon Zero Dawn PC patch makes it friendlier for Avast antivirus

Every week or so since launch, Guerrilla Games has released a new patch to try and better the unhinged PC port of Horizon Zero Dawn. This week is no different with 1.05 rolling out.

As with the four patches before it these changes are trying to minimise crashes and increase performance. Last week Guerrilla promised up to a 10 percent improvement depending on your PC’s hardware, and this week it’s seeking to reduce crashes should you be using Avast.

In the patch notes, under the crash fixes section, you can find this:

  • “Fixed a crash in NetPresenceManager that some players experienced when entering the game or the benchmark from the main menu.
  • Fixed a crash where the Steam SDK could crash on initialization when the game executable was started directly from installation folder rather than through Steam.
  • Fixed a crash which would occur if the player pressed ‘Stop’ in Steam immediately after pressing ‘Play’.
  • Fixed a startup crash when using Avast antivirus.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when VRAM was about to be oversubscribed.”

When we played (and reviewed) the game at launch we experienced a host of crashes and problems, but none of them from that list. It’s just another indicator that the PC port has some fundamental problems ever since being released on 7th August.

Aside from crash fixes Guerrilla also addressed a number of animation problems and general improvements.

The full 1.05 patch notes for Horizon Zero Dawn are available here.

As always if you’re playing the game and experience any problems, you should let the developer know by way of its report page.

We can only hope that these weekly patches continue and Horizon Zero Dawn becomes a better experience as it ages.
