The Invincible is a retrofuturistic game from new dev Starward Industries

if you’ve been specifically looking for a game that is “a first-person Sci-Fi thriller set in a retro-future timeline” then that’s a weird coincidence because those are the exact words developer Starward Industries has used to reveal its game The Invincible.

Starward Industries is a studio formed in 2018 that is based in Kraków, Poland. This may be a clue as to the talent on board as it features staff who worked at CD Projekt. Under the “AAA experience” portion of the studio’s website, The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Dying Light and more are name dropped as past exploits of the team.

The same website states that Starward Industries is looking at the AA space with its first game being this, The Invincible.

From the seven images released so far – see the header above and the gallery below – it’s clear that this game is focusing on a retrofuturistic look set anywhere but Earth, with the visuals powered by Unreal Engine 4. From the recently created Steam store page as well as that studio site we also have a bit more information about it.

“You are a scientist onboard an interstellar scientific expedition, suddenly thrown into a life-or-death rescue mission. Landing on a planet Regis III you have to find the missing crew members using some advanced space equipment, whilst relying on your brains and instincts to survive on the planet which quickly occurs to be unwelcoming. Soon you’ll discover that Regis III holds terrifying secrets which are uncovered while you’re piecing together the fate of your crew. And as you delve deeper into the mystery, you realise that perhaps you are not alone, and that some places like this planet are better left untouched. But it’s too late to turn back,” reads the store page.

From this it sounds like this may be a survival game with an open world crafting element a la No Man’s Sky, but that doesn’t seem to be the case going off of the Steam tags.

“Story rich”, “narration”, “conversation” and “investigation” are the tags attached to the game right now. We’ll have to wait for a trailer to see how that plays out in actual gameplay.

As for the title of the game the story is inspired by a book of the same name by Polish writer Stanisław Lem. This is rather funny as The Witcher is famously also based on a book series by a Polish author too, Andrzej Sapkowski. With ex-developers from The Witcher working on this game we have to wonder if Starward Industries is taking the same approach to source material hoping for similar success.

The Invincible is planned to launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2021.
