A look inside the new Game Concept Store in Mall of Africa

As we get ready to move to alert level 1, more South Africans will be preparing to head out again, with many still in need of physical retail experiences. In order to meet this need, as well as debut a few innovative solutions, Game is getting ready to open a new Concept Store in Mall of Africa.

The Concept Store will be officially opened to the public on 23rd September, the day before Heritage Day, with Game having worked on it during the lockdown.

“This new store is the first of its kind to be transformed as part of the strategy and has undergone a phased approach of upgrades designed specifically to address customer needs over the past year, which are now fully operational,” explains the retailer in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“Our new store concept goes beyond a providing a modernised look-and-feel, and rather encapsulates the direction we are moving in towards our broader turnaround as a business,” adds Andrew Stein, VP of Game.

To that end it is sporting a few new elements outside of the refreshed design, some of which will be experienced by the customer, but the vast majority of which will help give the retailer greater insight and control as to what happens in-store.

To that end Game says that some of the key technologies added to the Concept Store include:

  • QR Codes: These allow customer to scan QR codes to access information on the product, as well as the option to purchase the product online and have it delivered to them.
  • ESL: This technology provides staff with information on factors like rate of sale, days of stock cover and location of stock in the stockroom.
  • Smart Labels: These labels make it easier to track and manage stock in stockrooms.
  • Trackmatic Phase 2: This technology not only allows Game to track trucks carrying stock, but provides the retailer improved visibility on the type and volume of stock being carried.
  • Smart Camera Solution: This allows Game to manage queueing time for customers in stores, as well as secure its stock receiving bays.”

Powering many of the new operational elements that Game has introduced with this Concept Store is SAP S4/HANA, which the retailer recently moved to in order to handle smart solutions at scale.

“This also means we will be able to ensure an optimised assortment of products according to individual consumer demographics in each of our stores,” Stein enthuses.

Added to this will be self-checkout counters, price check booths, sampling vending machines, electronic shelf labels and free customer Wi-Fi in store. Along with a children’s play area, digital touchscreens that allow shoppers to access information on Game products and ranges, and interactive demonstration zones where consumers can test products such as prams, bicycles, and electronics, the retailer notes.

Before the Concept Store officially opens, Game has sent us some images of what things look like inside. To gain a better of idea of what’s on offer, take a look at the gallery below.
