Facebook wants you to strap your office to your head with the VR Infinite Office

We’ve seen many applications for virtual reality tech that don’t just focus on games.

For example, being able to control a machine in a mine using VR while you sit in the safety of an air-conditioned office, is a great idea.

Facebook is seemingly taking the idea of using VR for work and running with it with something it calls Infinite Office.

During its Facebook Connect event on Wednesday.

So that was bizarre.

Infinite Office is a VR workspace that you can customise to suit your needs. You can spin up new monitors or be transported to a forest or something similar.

The headset in the video is the Oculus Quest 2 which is said to be lightweight but you’re still strapping two displays to your head. While this might be fine for a training session, we’re not sure that wearing a VR headset for most of the day is going to be comfortable.

With that having been said, there are some cool features present in Infinite Office.

Passthrough mode for instance lets you toggle between VR and the real world so that you can see what is going on around you.

You might also notice in the video above a person is able to type with a VR headset on. According to TechCrunch, certain keyboards will be recognised and rendered in VR so that you can use them. Logitech is reportedly working on this as part of a partnership with Facebook.

Look, we get it, working from home can be lonely but we somehow don’t see Infinite Office catching on. With a starting price of $299, the Oculus Quest 2 is a pricey piece of kit and we can’t see companies investing in headsets for every employee.

The other important consideration is integration with existing business applications and processes which will require work from developers.

Somehow we don’t see Infinite Office taking off, even if COVID-19 sticks around for longer than we anticipate.
