Oh, Sony also revealed a new smartphone last night – the Xperia 5 II

Last night was a rather busy one for South Africans as far announcements go. We got confirmation of lockdown alert level 1, as well as pricing and availability for the PS5 consoles. Sticking with Sony, you have missed a new a new smartphone that the Japanese company revealed too – the Xperia 5 II.

This new offering is billed as a slightly cheaper alternative to the Xperia 1 II. That said, given how fresh the announcement is, we still need to hear from Sony as to when the Xperia 5 II will land in South Africa, and indeed for how much.

In the interim, we can still run through some of the key features and specifications for this new smartphone. To that end a 6.1″ OLED display is up front, with 120Hz and HDR support, as well as delivering a FullHD+ resolution (2520×1080).

Added to this is a camera setup that focuses on video, much like the Xperia 1 II, although not as powerful. Here a trio of lenses are found on the rear – all 12MP, but offering varying fields of view.

The primary option, however, features a 1/1.7″ Exmor RS sensor and f/1.7 aperture with a 84 degree field of view. There’s also a range of Zeiss-tuned and Cinematography features onboard.

Looking internally, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset is present, which also supports 5G connectivity. There’s also 8GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage added to the mix, as well as a dual SIM tray and 4 000mAh battery powering things.

All in all then, on paper the Xperia 5 II looks a well equipped flagship Android device.

While we await confirmation of a local launch, Stateside the new device is expected on 29th September for an estimated $949 (~R15 533).
