Fortnite: Save the World is being pushed off of macOS

The ongoing Epic Games vs Apple battle royale has claimed yet another victim on the side of Epic Games, this time in the form of the PvE version of Fortnite, Save the World.

Fortnite: Save the World is described as a “PvE action-building co-operative campaign” for Fortnite. Essentially it’s Fortnite without the 99 other players vying for your head.

The mode is available of PC and macOS but it won’t be available on the latter for much longer.

In a blog post on Thursday, Epic Games reported that Apple is preventing Epic Games from “signing games and patches for distribution on Mac” which ultimately prevents Epic Games from releasing a new patch for the game mode.

“Specifically, our upcoming v14.20 release will cause bugs for players on v13.40, resulting in a very poor experience. Since we are no longer able to sign updates and release fixes for these issues, beginning September 23, 2020, Fortnite: Save the World will no longer be playable on macOS,” Epic Games explained.

But the problem is a bit worse than not being able to play Fortnite PvE content on a Mac.

“We are issuing a refund for all players who purchased any Save the World Founder’s or Starter Packs (including Upgrades) and played Save the World on macOS between September 17, 2019 and September 17, 2020. Additionally, any purchased V-Bucks spent on Llamas on macOS in this period will also be refunded. As of today, September 17, 2020, Save the World Starter Packs will no longer be available for purchase on macOS,” writes Epic Games.

Players don’t have to do anything to get this refund but one has to wonder how much this will cost Epic Games.

As of time of writing access to Fortnite: Save the World costs $15.99 (bundled with a heap of cosmetic items as well) which isn’t too bad but it’s still a lot of money to hand back to customers.

What’s more is that, while v13.40 of Fortnite: Battle Royale is still playable on macOS, no more updates are coming to the game. It remains to be seen then if Epic Games will decide to remove Fortnite: Battle Royale from the platform completely in the future.
