It is day two of the country’s move to alert level 1 lockdown, and it remains to be seen what the change in regulations will mean for the daily infection rate of COVID-19 in South Africa.
For now, the latest figures from the National Department of Health (NDoH) show a relatively low number of new infections, with 725 being recorded over the past 24 hours. This may not be the start of a downward trend, however, with the past few weeks usually starting with a lower number of daily infections, ramping up from there as the week progressed.
As such we’ll need to wait to see what the next few days hold in terms of new infections.
Currently the total number of infections for the country now sits at 661 936, with 591 208 recoveries recorded to date. This translates to a recovery rate of 89.31 percent, which means the country is still teetering just shy of the 90 percent mark.
As for the number of fatalities to date, they now sit at 15 992, after 39 new deaths were recorded over the past 24 hours. Of the 39, nine are from the Eastern Cape, one from KwaZulu-Natal, nine from Gauteng, 16 from North West and four from the Western Cape, the NDoH confirms.
