COVID-19 in South Africa: 25th September

Most South Africans are taking advantage of yesterday’s Heritage Day public holiday to turn this weekend into an extra long one. While the break will prove welcome given life under lockdown over the past few months, we still need to contend with COVID-19 in South Africa.

To that end, the past 24 hours has seen 1 861 new cases being recorded by the National Department of Health (NDoH).

As such it should be interesting to see what the coming days yield as far as infections go, but for now the total number of cases for COVID-19 in South Africa to date sits at 667 049.

Recoveries too are high, with it now being 595 916, as the recovery rate continues to hover around the 89.3 percent mark.

As for fatalities, these too have risen over the past 24 hours as the NDoH records 77 more deaths. The department notes that of the new 77, seven are from the Eastern Cape, eight from KwaZulu-Natal, 58 from Gauteng, and four from the Western Cape. The total number of COVID-19-related deaths in the country is currently 16 283.

How the above numbers will be impacted by the recent move to alert level 1 lockdown, however, remains to be seen.
