Dell’s XPS range is getting an Intel 11th gen refresh and Evo certification

To our mind the only real “Macbook contender” is Dell’s incredulously thin XPS range.

Not only does the XPS offer a very thin exterior, inside, the notebooks are often crammed with enough tech to have you considering a bit of gaming after hours.

Given Intel’s recent announcements about 11th Gen Core processors, we’re starting to see OEMs revealing their wares and today was Dell’s turn.

The XPS 13 2-in-1, XPS 13 and XPS 13 Developer Edition will be getting an upgrade to 11th Gen Intel Core processors and will be Dell’s first to carry Intel Evo certification.

As you might recall, Intel Evo is your way of knowing a notebook sports the following features:

  • Consistent responsiveness on battery.
  • System wake from sleep in less than one second.
  • Nine or more hours of real-world battery life on systems with FHD displays.
  • Fast charging with up to a four-hour charge in under 30 minutes on systems with FHD displays.
  • Thunderbolt 4.
  • Intel Wi-Fi 6.

All three of the notebooks will be getting Thunderbolt 4 support, a memory bump from 3773MHz LPDDR4 to 4267MHz LPDDR4 which should make things a bit snappier.

As reported by Engadget, the XPS 13 2-in-1 will also feature an infra-red camera that supports Windows Hello. This is a great feature and one we hope to see more often.

The interesting XPS model here is the Developer Edition, which comes pre-loaded with Ubuntu 20.04LTS. Technically speaking there isn’t all that much of a difference though we suspect the real draw here is the ease of being able to boot into a Linux environment out of the box.

The big question now is when we will see these notebooks in South Africa if at all.

Given that local Dell distributor, Drive Control Corporation has just recently brought the redesigned XPS 13 2020 (pictured above) into South Africa we’re curious to see if these new 11th Generation iterations also find their way into the local market.

We’re incredibly keen to see what sort of things Intel’s Xe graphics are capable of and combined with Dell’s tiny form factor of a notebook we’re expecting these notebooks to be rather mighty.

At least until Intel finally manages to release a 7nm chip.

The revamped Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 and XPS 13 land in the US this week on 30th September.
