Pokémon’s Crown Tundra arrives in less than a month – 22nd October

The second of two expansions for Pokémon Sword and Shield – The Crown Tundra – finally has a release date of 22nd October.

This has been announced by way of a live stream on the official Pokémon YouTube channel, embedded below.

While a release date before the end of this year was always expected, it’s the other details revealed in the stream that are surprising.

Firstly there’s a date for a new product: a bundle of either Sword or Shield together with its respective Expansion pass that allows access to the previous expansion Isle of Armor, as well as the new Crown Tundra. This will be available come 6th November 2020.

Secondly legendary Pokémon from previous generations will be available to catch in a similar way to Max Raid Battles. These returning legendaries will vary depending on which copy of the game you have. The image above is provided in the stream, but we’re not sure if it’s a definite indication of which legendaries will be available where.

Next up in the surprises is hat DLC for Pikachu which are unlocked through passwords. One of eight have been revealed so far with more on the way.

Outside of Sword and Shield there’s even more news. Pokémon Go and Pokémon Home will finally be able to talk to each other before the end of the year, with this link finally unlocking Gigantamax Melmetal.

The stream then ends on a rather strange note: a music video based on Pokémon by Japanese band Bump of Chicken. The music also comes with an amazing animated music video.

All of this is exciting news but we’re very apprehensive. The Sword and Shield base games are still rather milquetoast in our eyes and the Isle of Armor expansion did nothing to improve on the experience aside from adding another waifu.

We’ll be playing Crown Tundra to hopefully surprise us, but we’re expecting more of the same.

Gigantamax Melmetal has existed in Sword and Shield since launch, but was unobtainable until now.
