Your data backup strategy needs to evolve to focus on recovery

Nasty software is everywhere whether it be lurking in an email with a dodgy URL or hiding in an application.

With this in mind, businesses are careful to backup their data but simply hitting “Backup” every so often isn’t enough anymore.

Should your business be hit by ransomware for example, having a backup of your data is only one part of the solution.

According to Commvault South Africa country manager, Johan Scheepers, data management must become part of a business’ strategy.

“Data has become a key strategic asset, and digital transformation is driving innovation and new customer experiences. Businesses are expected to be online and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. Without access to their data, the majority of modern enterprises simply cannot function,” says Scheepers.

But it’s not just businesses that are evolving, cybercriminals are evolving as well.

As the Commvault SA head points out to us, data management is about securing your data at all points of the value chain rather than being focussed on keeping backups. This is due in part to legislation governing the protection of data locally.

While your backups might be safe, if for example somebody manages to steal your data through ransomware or a quick and dirty hack, fines, reputational damage and worse could be on the cards.

“Data is not a technology problem, it is a strategic business asset, and it needs to be treated as such. Data protection strategy needs to solve business challenges and align with business priorities. A simple solution that scales up and out as needed, and meets objectives for areas of risk, is essential for mitigating exposure,” says Scheepers.

“Moving beyond backup and into the realms of data management, including Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity, can help businesses to improve efficiency, simplify complexity and enhance flexibility. Modernising and simplifying data protection, in alignment with business goals and digital transformation strategy, is vital for meeting data needs today and in the future,” the Commvault country manager adds.

We should also point out that data management includes following best practices regarding data backups.
