The University of South Africa (Unisa) is currently re-opening its campuses for students but, to control capacity and keep everyone involved safe, bookings will be mandatory to enter the premises.
These are being handed by a new campus access portal. The university calls this an app but it’s really just a regular website you can visit here.
At the time of writing only the Science Campus and the Sunnyside Campus are open. Unisa states that other campuses and regional offices will be opened, “in the next week or two”.
TO make a booking you will first need to register. This isn’t as straightforward as it seems as it’s separate from the myUnisa system. Details for registering can be found here.
Once registered the process of booking a place at either campuses is as follows:
- Sign into the campus access portal
- Select your day, time slot, campus and building
- Check the box detailing your agreement to COVID-19 precautions
- Click on “submit”.
Again there are caveats here. Bookings are only open for the day you are filling the form out, and the day after. You can’t book ahead any later than that. Both campuses only have two time slots open in 08:00 – 12:00 and 13:00 – 16:00. You cannot book an exact time and each slot can take 150 people.
The aforementioned COVID-19 precautions agreement reads as follows. We recommend looking over this carefully to ensure that you and other visitors can all stay safe.
“By ticking this box, I confirm that I currently do not have a fever, nor am I experiencing any breathing difficulties, a sore throat, chest pains and/or coughs, changes in my ability to taste or smell things, and have not travelled to a high risk country in the last 14 days or had contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19,” it states.
On top of this precaution students will need to present their student card at the entrance and have their temperature taken.
Finally, despite Unisa being confident that its system will work, it does recommend taking a screenshot and / or making a printout of the confirmation should your booking not show up once you arrive.
