COVID-19 in South Africa: 1st October

Earlier this week there was a bit of an anomaly in terms of COVID-19 in South Africa, with consecutive days recording the same number of new infections. While it remains unexplained, unfortunately the number of new cases over the past 24 hours has risen to 1 767, according to the latest statistics from the National Department of Health (NDoH).

This brings the country’s total number of COVID-19 infections to date to 674 339, with 608 122 recoveries also being reported by the NDoH. The latter translates to a recovery rate of 90.17 percent, which is a figure it has floated in and around for the past few weeks now.

Hopefully in the coming weeks under alert level 1 lockdown, we can see the the recovery rate inch closer to the 98 percent mark that President Ramaphosa noted in his address to the nation a couple of weeks ago.

Looking at the other crucial statistics, the number of deaths related to COVID-19 have also risen to 16 734, with 67 new fatalities being recorded. At the time of writing, there is no indication of which provinces account for the latest fatalities.
