Insomniac Games responds to outcry about the Peter Parker change

A few hours ago Insomniac Games released some exciting news about Marvel’s Spider-Man, the upcoming Miles Morales game and more, but what everyone is talking about instead is Peter Parker.

The developer has made the decision to recast the actor who was used for the face of the character in the original game. Actor John Bubniak was used for this originally and have the character an older look that was appropriate for a Spider-Man / Peter Parker that had already been in the superhero business a good number of years before the player even starts up the game.

Bubniak has been replaced by an actor named Ben Jordan who brings a much younger look to the character. The voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, remains the same.

While “anger on Twitter” isn’t something that can be properly measured, we can look at the like to dislike ratio of the video reveal above. At the time of writing it is 3 465 likes versus 6 929 dislikes. That being said the news of the change is still only a few hours old, so we expect to see that number change.

In response to this creative director at Insomniac Games, Bryan Intihar, had this to say about the change:

“Today’s news about the new Peter Parker face model has surprised some of you, and we at Insomniac totally understand your reaction. Heck, it even took me awhile to get used to Peter’s new look. But as we discussed the franchise’s future and moving to the PS5, it quickly became apparent that delivering even more believable-looking characters made finding a better facial match for actor Yuri Lowenthal—who we all love as Peter—a necessity.

We care as much about this character as your attachment to him, so please know we didn’t make this decision/change lightly. As we did throughout the development of Marvel’s Spider-Man, we’ll continue to read your comments, listen, and always be looking for ways to improve every facet of the game. At the same time, I hope you can trust us that this decision is what we feel is best for the future of the franchise and our upcoming goals for this beloved Marvel character.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man launched in 2018 and has since become a fan favourite. Completely changing the main character’s face after a couple of years was bound to cause whiplash especially when, contrary to Intihar’s statement, the general fan consensus seems to be that this wasn’t necessary at all.

On top of this many have pointed out that Jordan looks surpassingly like MCU Spider-Man actor Tom Holland, and the change could be a way to retroactively make this game some kind of facsimile for the movies.

All this talk of a 2018 game is because of the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The Ultimate Edition of this game will come with a full remaster of the 2018 title, where the Peter Parker change will be done.

More details about the remaster and the Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales: Ultimate Edition are available on the official PlayStation Blog.
