Nintendo warns of leaving the Switch uncharged for six months

While the Nintendo Switch may be an insanely popular console that players use daily, a warning has gone out about leaving the console unused for long periods of time.

The official Japanese Nintendo support Twitter account recently announced the following. The below is after a run through the automatic Google translate on Twitter:

“The battery built into the game console may become unchargeable if it has not been charged or used for too long. Please charge it once every six months.”

While this tweet may seem out of the blue, this specific account tweets out general information like this all the time, so it’s more of a friendly reminder than anything else.

That being said some people have mentioned that this is a bit of a sour note given the impressive reputation of Nintendo handhelds in the past. Many have fond memories of the Game Boy Advance SP and 3DS lineup powering up just fine after years of not being used.

Not wanting to depend on memories we dug up our original model black 3DS which we last used to review Pokémon Sun back in December 2016. It’s been unused for almost four years and, unfortunately, did not power back on immediately.

It did, however, accept a charge just fine and was up and running after a few minutes.

If the same can be said for the Nintendo Switch four years from now with zero use during that time is anyone’s guess, but the tweet from the Nintendo support page is worth keeping in mind regardless.

What we also want to know is how this information pertains to unopened consoles. Again, right now, Switch units are flying off of shelves, but we have to imagine some time in the future new old stock may be an issue.
