16 seconds of the Monster Hunter movie manage to anger everyone

Over the weekend we finally got our first look at the Monster Hunter movie directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, a pair best known for the Resident Evil series of movies. In just a handful of seconds, however, Monster Hunter has left many dejected.

We’ve known from stills and promotional art in the past that this version of Monster Hunter would be less, “colourful characters with with oversized weapons” and more “drab soldiers and guns”, but seeing it in motion has sent many over the edge due to how far this departs from any of the games.

A vocal point of the teaser has also been T.I., whose character appears to be a sniper that closes the wrong eye when looking through the scope of a gun.

Aside from actors turning around in surprise and yelling, we get to see the monster Black Diablos which Jovovich calls “one nasty bitch“.

The official site for the movie gives us this synopsis of what exactly is going on:

“When an unexpected sandstorm transports Lt. Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower. In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures,” the description reads.

The character played by Jaa has been shown off before, most famously in a pair of posters with an appropriately sized bow (below). On top of everything else many are wondering what hand waving explanation the movie will give for why guns don’t harm the monsters but primitive weaponry does.

For now all we can really do is wait for December. Even the release of the movie has many people worried as countless films have their release dates moved to try and outmanoeuvre the pandemic.

Aside from that the internet, of course, already has some funny remarks about this odd movie.
