Communication minister’s WhatsApp hacked

At this stage we’re used to seeing claims of hacks when a celebrity or minister tweets something that didn’t come out the way it sounded in their heads.

But today it appears as if there is cause for concern following the hack of Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams.

According to the minister’s department, “The WhatsApp account of Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams has been hacked, resulting in private and confidential information being in the hands of a third party.”

“This illegal activity has been reported to relevant authorities and platform owners for action. Obtaining and distributing information that is illegally obtained is a crime and offenders will be reported to legal authorities,” the department added.

It is unclear at this stage how the minister was hacked and given the myriad methods that can be used to hack an individual we’re not comfortable speculating about the attack’s details.

We have contacted the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and we were provided with the statement above. We will be sure to update our readers as more information comes to light.

This does however raise an important point, you should enable multi-factor authentication for WhatsApp.

For Android and iOS users tap the Menu option, then tap Account, then Two-step verification, and tap Enable and then follow the instructions on screen.

Make sure you remember that PIN number as WhatsApp will prompt you to enter it periodically.
