As we exit the second weekend of life under alert level 1 lockdown, there is still much to ponder as to when the country will move out of its national disaster status and try to return to a relative state of normalcy. While that still remains an uncertainty at this stage, we still need to contend with the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa.
It is unclear at this stage what the move to level 1 will mean for the country’s daily infection ratel, but the the past 24 hours has seen 1 573 new cases being reported by the the National Department of Health (NDoH).
This pushes the total number of cases for COVID-19 in South Africa to date to 681 289, with 614 781 recoveries also being reported. As has been the case most of last week, the recovery rate remains at 90 percent, with the NDoH hoping that it heads north soon.
As for the number of tests conducted to date, according to the NDoH, that figure is currently 4 269 626.
Unfortunately, the department also reports that 38 additional fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours. South Africa’s total number of deaths to date related to COVID-19 is now 16 976.
