Here are Apple’s first 5G smartphones, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

The “Hi, Speed” invite was a dead give away as to nobody’s surprise Apple announced the latest iPhone, the iPhone 12 would sport 5G support.

The iPhone 12 retains the 6.1 inch size from the iPhone 11 but with reduced bezels so that the handset is much smaller in your hand. There is also an iPhone 12 mini which features a smaller 5.4inch display.

Storage configurations include 64GB, 128GB and 256GB for all iPhone 12 devices.

The design reminds us of iPhones of yore but this is for a reason. Apple says it created it’s own custom 5G antenna. Because Apple controls the development of the iPhone from silicon to software, it can prime its software to take full advantage of 5G.

The iPhone 12 will also feature an OLED display which sports a peak brightness of 1200nits and supports Dolby Vision, HDR 10 and HLG.

Onward to more silicon, the A14 Bionic chip.

Apple is using a 5nm process here which fits 11.8 billion transistors, a 40 percent increase over the A13.

The chip features a hexa-core core CPU, and a quad-core GPU it claims is 50 percent faster than any other chip on the market. The Neural Engine now features 16 cores and is 80 percent faster capable of 11 trillion operations per second.

This, Apple says will give developers access to more power to power “console quality games”

As for the rear camera there is a 12MP ultra wide sensor and a 12MP wide camera, F1.6 with a seven element lens that has better low light performance, resulting in less noise. Computational photography uses machine learning to enhance details in photos.

Mag Safe makes a triumphant return for iPhone this time featuring wireless charging at 15W.

Accessories can snap into place straight onto the iPhone or onto a number of cases. This gives a bit more customisation to the handset.

iPhone 12 Pro

The iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max were also unveiled.

The iPhone 12 Pro measures in at 6.1inch while the Pro Max clocks in at a massive 6.7inches.

The real draw here is the triple lens camera. The iPhone 12 Pro features a 12MP wide, telephoto and ultrawide lens. The iPhone 12 Pro Max builds this out even further with a 12MP telephoto lens that sports 2.5X optical zoom.

Apple is also introducing its own take on RAW file formats in AppleProRAW that will come to iPhone later this year. The format takes advantage of Apple’s computational power such as Deep Fusion while providing the flexibility of RAW.

As for video, Apple says you will be able to shoot and edit Dolby Vision HDR content right from the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone 12 Pro series features storage configurations of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB.

The iPhone 12 will start at $799 while the iPhone 12 mini will start at $699. Pre-orders open in more than 30 countries on 16th October with delivery expected by 23rd October.

The iPhone 12 Pro will start at $999 while the iPhone 12 Pro Max will fetch $1 099. The iPhone 12 Pro will be available for pre-order on 16th October with availability on 23rd October while the iPhone Pro Max will be available for pre-order on 6th November and available from 13th November.
