Government’s Matric exam countdown reaches 20 days

Last month Department of Basic Education (DBE) Minister, Angie Motshekga, declared an official countdown to the Matric exams of 2020. As of today, 15th October, this countdown is at 20 days.

The South African Matric exams begin on 5th November and end on 15th December. By our count that’s 21 days left until things kick off, but maybe the department is measuring things differently.

To mark the countdown the official Twitter account for the DBE released a graphic, in place of having some automated counter somewhere. You can see the graphic for 20 days above.

Regardless, said department has estimated that 1 058 699 students – more than a million – will be writing these exams. This will be the largest amount of students to do so making this the biggest public examination in the history of the country.

After all exams have been written students will receive their results on 22nd January 2021. There’s a very short amount of time between the end of the exam season and the release of the results – just over a month – so we’ll have to wait and see if the DBE can have everything together and avoid further delays.

2020 has been one of the most difficult years ever when it comes to education because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the South African lockdown which had schools shuttered for many months.

With Matric exams being more than stressful at the best at times it remains to be seen how 2020’s students will fair once they sit to write.
