As we approach the weekend, the National Department of Health (NDoH) released its latest figures for COVID-19 in South Africa, as it does daily, and things appear to be staying on trend for the numbers we’ve seen during alert level 1 lockdown.
To that end, 1 770 new cases for COVID-19 have been reported over the past 24 hours, with the total to date now sitting at 698 184.
The recovery rate remains steady at 90 percent, with 628 301 recoveries reported to date. As such, it looks like the move to level 1 has had no adverse effects in that regard, but it remains to be seen if and indeed when the country’s recovery rate will breach the 90 percent mark.
Unfortunately the recent trend of a higher number of daily fatalities has continued, with 158 more deaths being reported by the NDoH. The total number of deaths for the country related to the pandemic is now 18 309.
Of the 158 new fatalities, the NDoH confirms that 22 are from the Eastern Cape, 19 from the Free State, 38 from KwaZulu-Natal, 70 from Gauteng, five from Limpopo, and four from the Western Cape.
