Netflix will have finished shooting on 150 productions by year end

As part of its Q3 2020 earnings call, Netflix shared its content plans for the next year.

Within those plans was a mention that since March, Netflix has completed principal photography on over 50 productions since March 2020, and 150 expected to complete shooting by the year’s end.

Among those productions is season four of Stranger Things, Red Notice (an action flick staring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds) and The Witcher ‘s second season.

“For our 2021 slate, we continue to expect the number of Netflix originals launched on our service to be up year over year in each quarter of 2021 and we’re confident that we’ll have an exciting range of programming for our members, particularly relative to other entertainment service options. As discussed last quarter, some of our most popular returning titles are expected to launch in the second half of next year,” the platform said.

In terms of content launched this year, the fact that many are confined to their homes means millions watched Netflix content.

The first 28 days of release of latest seasons of The Umbrella Academy and Lucifer drew in 43 million and 38 million households respectively. Ratched, Ryan Murphy’s thriller based on One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, drew in 48 million households in its first four weeks of release.

As regards doccies, the excellent American Murder: The Family Next Door (no really, it’s a fantastic documentary presented in a unique style drew in 52 million households. The Social Dilemma only managed to attract 38 million households in its first 28 days.

As for local language content, Netflix continues to invest in that area.

“Season one of the Mexican telenovela Oscuro Deseo (Dark Desire) was our biggest local language original globally this quarter. Our slate of Korean dramas continue to travel well throughout APAC [Asian Pacific] and beyond, while anime is another category of content with fans all over the world,” said Netflix.

Netflix further explained that it is working with regional firms to hone its content offering to suit certain parts of the globe. In India for instance, Netflix worked with Reliance Jio to integrate Netflix onto Jio’s set-top boxes.

“All of these initiatives are important and work in concert with our big investment in local originals to improve the Netflix experience for our members,” Netflix said.

While investors aren’t fans of Netflix right now, we’re rather impressed with what Netflix has managed to do during a global pandemic.
