htxt.africast – Huawei, the Mate 40 and the Android problem

Despite the sweltering heat in South Africa, the africast is back this week to discuss the new Huawei phones and a lot more. We turned off the fans and air-conditioning to record this, at great risk to our personal health.

Before Huawei, we have some smaller stories to look at.

First is our interview with Modus Studios Brazil, which is making the 3D mech fighting game Override 2. Next up is Citrix, which discusses ways to prevent burnout now that so many people are still working from home. Lastly there’s Crypto Fest, which is happening soon – online – and you should check it it out, especially because it’s free.

As for the meat and potatoes of this week’s edition of the africast, it’s focused on the recently announced Huawei Mate 40 series of phones.

Huawei has been fighting an uphill battle in the last year or so due to US sanctions and the gimped version of Android that its phones have had to ship with. That said, the Mate 40 series is packing some very high quality hardware, which may tip things in its favour, but we’ll have to wait to see if that’s the case.

For now we have the specs and the overseas prices for these devices, and we can do a bit of speculation about the splash they will make locally and abroad.

Unfortunately due to a technical glitch, the last 10 minutes of this week’s africast were corrupted. We apologise for the issue, but it will be resolved before the next africast.
