Marvel’s Avengers ‘Thank You’ bundle: free now until 5th November

Marvel’s Avengers has had a rocky life from announcement, to release and now post-release. Recognising this, publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics have rolled out a “Thank You” bundle to reward new and existing players for buying the game.

The bundle is available right now and will be up until 5th November 2020. What’s in the bundle, and what the resources can be used for, have been outlined by way of announcement:

  • “1500 Credits – Credits can be spent in the Marketplace on Outfits, Takedowns, Emotes, and Nameplates. You’ll have enough for a Legendary Outfit and Nameplate!
  • 7000 Units – Spend these on marvelous items at various venors.
  • 250 Upgrade Modules – Upgrade high level gear!
  • 20 DNA Keys – Unlock special strongboxes!”

This bundle was announced back in mid-October when a big State of the Game Update was released. In this announcement some problems of the game are openly recognised.

“Marvel’s Avengers’ launch was not without turbulence, and we recognize that a number of issues detracted from your enjoyment of the game. This does not align with Crystal Dynamics’ value of craftsmanship, and for that we sincerely apologize,” the developer wrote.

Said “turbulence” refers to massive problems in the game, both objective and subjective. Objectively Marvel’s Avengers has / had many technical problems and glitches. While these have continually been ironed out with patches it made for a very poor experience. We catalogued the many technical problems we experienced right here.

On the subjective side of things this game also has deep-rooted issues when it comes to game design and execution. You can read our review for a proper analysis of this but it comes down to a a fundamental schism where Marvel’s Avengers feels like a Frankenstein’s monster – a singleplayer experience that was killed and then reanimated into a co-op living game in an attempt to push microtransactions and make money.

As Crystal Dynamics is still working on the game, fixing bugs and adding content, we can only hope that all of this can be corrected. The Thank You Bundle is a nice touch for those who bought in early, but it’s a small bandage over a gaping wound.
