Nokia and NASA are partnering up to put LTE, on the Moon

Humanity has accomplished some spectacular things and then there are other things we’ve done that have us scratch our heads.

Case in point is when earlier this week Nokia announced that it had been selected by NASA to deploy an “ultra-compact, low-power, space-hardened, end-to-end LTE solution on the lunar surface in late 2022”.

The question you might have (because we most certainly did) is why Nokia is deploying an LTE network on the Moon.

The announcement forms part of NASA’s Tipping Point initiative in which companies submitted proposals to assist NASA’s Artemis operations on the Moon before the decade closes out.

In total, 14 companies will be partnering with NASA including SpaceX and Lockheed Martin.

Circling back to the Nokia partnership which is work $14.1 million, the firm gave us a bit of insight into how its tech will work.

This specific solution has been designed to withstand the stresses of launch and landing. It’s also ready to operate in the harsh environment of space.

“Leveraging our rich and successful history in space technologies, from pioneering satellite communication to discovering the cosmic microwave background radiation produced by the Big Bang, we are now building the first ever cellular communications network on the Moon,” chief technology officer at Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs president, Marcus Weldon said in a press statement.

The network will provide critical communication capabilities for data transmission, remote control of rovers and streaming of high definition video.

“Reliable, resilient and high-capacity communications networks will be key to supporting sustainable human presence on the lunar surface. By building the first high performance wireless network solution on the Moon, Nokia Bell Labs is once again planting the flag for pioneering innovation beyond the conventional limits,” Weldon added.

NASA is also set to announce new science results regarding the Moon next week Monday 26th October.
