You need to earn, not buy, cosmetics in Override 2: Super Mech League

A constant worry in the videogame world of 2020 is microtransactions and other nickel-and-dime techniques to separate players from their money after already purchasing a game, especially in titles which have a large focus on characters and customisation. Thankfully we now know that Override 2: Super Mech League will avoid this.

Earlier this week we got to interview developer Modus Studios Brazil to find out what’s going on with the sequel to the 3D mech fighting game Override: Mech City Brawl from 2016.

General manager at the studio, Rafael Gatti, answered our important question about character customisation in this new game and how players will unlock it –

Hypertext: How will skins for your mechs work in the new game? Can they entirely be earned by playing or will they be purchasable with real world money?

Rafael Gatti: Skins and other cosmetics are earned entirely by playing—there are no microtransactions. There are some cool changes to how you equip cosmetics in Override 2 that give players more freedom to customize their mechs. We are excited to reveal more soon!

Having played the first game at launch years ago unlocking new skins for characters by playing was a lot of fun, so we’re happy to see this return in the 2020 sequel. The way skins were unlocked in the first game wasn’t great (as you can find out in our review) so we’re hoping this is improved upon. Hopefully that upcoming reveal mentioned in the interview question will shed light on the new system.

In terms of monetisation Override 2 will have a base game, a DLC season pass and an Ultraman Deluxe Edition which includes the base game plus four crossover characters from the popular Japanese franchise Ultraman.

Override 2: Super Mech League launches in December 2020 and all the big consoles: Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Before release several betas are also running so you can try it out for free and help with development. You can sign up for these betas on the official Override site.
