LEGO’s Sesame Street set is R2500 in South Africa

A few days ago LEGO announced set code 21324, called 123 Sesame Street. We now also know that it will cost R2 499.99 when it launches in South Africa come 1st November.

So how does that local pricing compare to other countries? The RRP of the set abroad is £109.99 / $119.99 / €119.99. At the time of writing those prices convert to ~R2 333.40 / ~R1 953.95 / ~R2 308.62 respectively.

When looking at these prices it’s best to ignore the one from the US, as this usually doesn’t include tax and makes it look much cheaper than it is. Compared to the UK and EU prices South Africans will be paying around R200 more. This is to be expected with a set of this size and price. Anyone who has tried to import items on their own dime can attest to this.

This price comes to us from the official LEGO Store, where the set will be available exclusively at launch.

With 1 367 pieces this is a medium sized set and, when built, it measures in at 24 X 35 X 21 centimetres (height X width X depth). There are four minifigures included here: Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie. Oscar the Grouch also comes in the box but we don’t count him as a minifure as he’s a brick build.

This set releasing in our country is of particular note due to the existence of Takalani Sesame. For those unfamiliar with this show it is the South African version of Sesame Street and it is known locally and internationally for being rather progressive and including a character – Kami – who is canonically HIV-positive.

As the LEGO set is based on the original American programme Kami and other Takalani Sesame-specific characters obviously aren’t included. That being said, this is LEGO, so we really hope someone takes the set and modifies it to fit into the local version of the famous franchise.
