Tinder rolls out face-to-face video chat globally

If you are an avid Tinder user, you may be interested to know that the video chat feature that the dating platform has been testing out in selected regions, is now ready for a global rollout.

Before you go trying out the new feature, its global rollout is not for all countries that currently have access to Tinder, with 14 noted at this stage.

To that end, those in the United States, UK, Brazil, Australia, Spain, Italy, France, Vietnam, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Peru and Chile, will be able to try it out.

While we wait for the rollout to be available in these parts, Tinder also importantly noted how the video chat functionality would work, as well as the security elements that have been built into it.

Given that harassment is a big issue, especially on social media and apps like Tinder, the platform has expressly explained that video chat will require an opt-in from both parties in order to work.

To that end, once you match with someone, you can send a request to video chat. If the request is accepted, the video chat can begin. It can also be ended at any time by either party.

There’s also mention of ground rules, that must be adhered to.

“Conversation is a two-way street, and it’s better when you’re together 50/50,” according to a press release sent to Engadget regarding the announcement, “Plus, this helps you make sure you’re putting your best face forward with your match.”

Once a video chat has ended, you will be prompted to rate the experience, like most videoconferencing applications ask you to do, as well as having the ability to report at any time.

While adding video chat could prove a way to get even more people to use the app, it remains to be seen how it will work in practice. The cynics in us tend to think it won’t be long before terms of service are infringed upon, and stricter regulations are put in place, but let’s see.
