Samsung reportedly pondering phone packaging sans charger

When Apple revealed its new iPhone 12 lineup earlier this month, the big talking points were not the support for 5G, the new 5nm processor or the price tags. Instead, it was the fact that Apple will not be shipping the devices with chargers in their packaging as part of a green initiative from the company. Now reports suggest Samsung is mulling over a similar decision.

While it remains to be seen whether Apple’s choice is indeed environmentally conscience, or simply an elaborate plan to get consumers to buy expensive wall chargers separately (okay, tin foil hat is off now), this would not be the first time that Samsung has focused on its packaging.

The South Korean firm announced a change to sustainable materials for packaging in early 2019, this a decision like this seems to follow suit.

According to Sammobile via Korean site, ChosunBiz, the company is reportedly considering removing both the wall charger and earphones for the upcoming Galaxy S21.

The more important question, however, is how consumers would react to it. While they will likely still buy Samsung phones regardless of the charger being in the packaging or not, being forced to fork out extra cash for something that was once standard is no doubt frustrating.

How much ire it would incur is unclear, but if Apple and Samsung do it, it may spark a change throughout the smartphone maker industry. This especially as more pressure is being put on companies to be environmentally focused, and make changes wherever possible.

Our only advice to Samsung Mobile South Africa if such a decision was taken, is to reduce the price of official Samsung wall chargers, cables, earphones and other essential accessories, as it would go a long way in pleasing new consumers to the ecosystem, who would need to buy them separately.
