Over the past 24 hours the number of new daily COVID-19 infections for the country have risen past the 2k mark. 2 056 to be more precise, according to the latest figures from the National Department of Health (NDoH) regarding COVID-19 in South Africa.
Last week we saw the daily number surpass this mark on consecutive days, resulting in some questioning whether this was the start of a second wave. Should a similar figure be reported over the coming days, it will no doubt spark the same kind of rumours.
For now though, we have to wait to see what the NDoH has to report.
To that end, the department confirms that the total number of cases for the country sits at 721 770, with 649 935 recoveries reported too. The latter means the recovery rate is still sitting at 90 percent.
Unfortunately 53 new fatalities have also been reported, pushing the total number of deaths related to COVID-19 to 19 164. Of the 53, the NDoH says 37 are from the Eastern Cape, four from Gauteng, five from the Free State, five from KwaZulu-Natal and two from Mpumalanga.
