Primal, the newest project by Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky, impressed the world when it launched its first five episodes in 2019, and it recently won three Emmys for its amazing animation.

Now in the tail end of 2020 the show is getting five more episodes. While South Africans had to wait a while for the original batch of season one, the same will not be true for this new content.

The first of the new episodes – episode six, “Scent of Prey” – just aired overseas, and today it’s available on local streaming service Showmax.

Thanks to Showmax we’ve seen the first two episodes of the new five additions already, and we can report on it without spoiling anything.

Scent of Prey deals with the immediate aftermath of episode five, which was a bit of a cliffhanger. If you were watched the original run of the show at launch or when it arrived in the country, you’ve probably been waiting a while to learn about the fate of the main characters usually referred to as Fang and Spear.

This new episode deals with the cliffhanger well and, of all things, it reminded us of the 2011 Liam Neeson movie The Grey.

Where things really get strange is the seventh episode. Titled “Plague of Madness” part of it is shown in the trailer above with what seems to be a zombie dinosaur (this episode was also released ahead of episode six in some territories).

If you found the previous episodes of Primal a bit of the “senseless” violence side of things Plague of Madness is no different, but it really feels like a turning point for the series. All that violence in the other episodes has been a product of Fang and Spear just trying to survive, while Plague of Madness is much sadder and disturbing than killing to survive.

If that sounds a bit vague you’ll just need to watch yourself as Primal comes highly recommended from us. For fans and newcomers to Samurai Jack and Tartakovsky’s 2003 Clone Wars, Primal continues the solid gold quality and action.
