Nexus Mods washes its hands of political content

Nexus Mods – arguable the most popular site when it comes to the PC modding scene – has announced a blanket ban on US political content.

In an official announcement it’s stated that Nexus Mods has seen an increase in politics-based mods just as it did four years ago during the last US presidential election. Political content across America, and thus the internet, is bound to continue to increase before the election takes place on 3rd November.

“Considering the low quality of the mods being uploaded, the polarising views they express and the fact that a small but vocal contingent of our users are seemingly not intelligent or grown up enough to be able to debate the issues without resorting to name calling and baseless accusations without proof (indicative of the wider issues plaguing our world at this time) we’ve decided to wipe our hands clean of this mess and invoke an outright ban on mods relating to sociopolitical issues in the United States,” reads the announcement.

“We have neither the time, the care or the wish to moderate such things. This ban will apply to all mods uploaded from the 28th of September onwards. We will review this restriction sometime after the next President of the United States has been inaugurated,” it adds.

We highly recommend giving the whole announcement a read because the wording is refreshingly honest. Aside from the above it calls the uploaders of this content “cowards with sock puppet accounts” and recommends that users, when discovering it, simply report it and move on with their lives. Engaging with them would “only fuel the idiots further”, as the statement continues.

This is refreshing because most big sites on the internet tiptoe around these issues. This is almost always in an effort to avoid upsetting either side and losing users.

And, as predicted, endless comments from various sites and its users have already decried this Nexus Mods decision, while others have correctly pointed out that it’s a private site that can do whatever its owners please. To that the announcement ends on the following:

“To be blunt, we do not care how this looks nor do we care if you think the mods we do or don’t moderate reflect on us, our political beliefs or what we do and don’t want on our site. Say and do what you want on other sites or services, we care nothing for it here.”

For those wondering, the header image above is a mod from Nexus Mods – the Captain America Power Armor from user niceguyhenry.
