Nvidia delays launch of RTX 3070 GPUs to end of October

The launch of Nvidia’s RTX 30 series GPUs has been, interesting.

Aside from some cards crashing before a driver update was issued, leading many to believe capacitors being used by add-in board partners were at fault, stock levels of the Nvidia RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 have been incredibly low.

The consensus among reviewers has been that Nvidia was far too eager with its timelines for this launch leaving many of its partners scrambling to get finished product to retailers. In the instance of the RTX 3080, some reviewers were granted access to drivers before partners.

With this comedy of errors playing out live before us, we were worried that the launch of the RTX 3070 would go the same way. With that card set to be the entry point for many Nvidia fans, many are worried about stock levels.

Which is why last week Nvidia announced that it would be pushing back its RTX 3070 launch by a few days.

“Production of GeForce RTX 3070 graphics cards are ramping quickly. We’ve heard from many of you that there should be more cards available on launch day. To help make that happen, we are updating the availability date to Thursday, October 29th,” wrote Nvidia.

Those keeping notes will be aware that this is one day after AMD announces its RDNA2 GPUs so it will be interesting to see how sales play out though we suspect many PC builders will have already made their choice.

Brand loyalty in the PC space is a fierce thing.

Nvidia claims that the RTX 3070 will deliver similar or better performance than an Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti which is quite the promise.

Of course we will have to see whether those claims hold water but we’re going to have to wait a bit longer for that now.
