It is Friday the 13th, which means the more superstitious among us are a bit more cautious. It may be fitting then that we’ve seen a steady rise in the number of new daily infections for COVID-19 in South Africa.
This as the National Department of Health (NDoH) reports that 2 338 new cases have been recorded over the past 24 hours.
This is the highest number of new daily infections this week, with continued struggles in the Eastern Cape further exacerbating things, as the President noted in his national address earlier in the week.
Consequently, the total number of cases for the country to date now sits at 744 732. Added to this, the NDoH says over 5.06 million tests have been conducted, along with 690 903 recoveries being reported. As has been the case this week, the recovery rate remains at 92 percent.
Unfortunately though, 65 new fatalities have been recorded over the past 24 hours. The NDoH says of the new 65 deaths, the Eastern Cape accounts for 37, the Free State for 18, Gauteng has one, KwaZulu-Natal has one and the Western Cape eight.
