We don’t want to go back to working in an office say South African SME employees

Do you want to go back to an office if COVID-19 is ever brought under control?

According to research conducted by Kaspersky locally, 50 percent of those reading this answered “No” to the above question.

Truthfully this is not at all surprising. The world of work forced employers to explore a new way of working and, for the most part, the wheels still keep turning.

We’re hesitant to call remote working a success just yet as concerns around productivity are yet to be made real with data to back things up but in our experience, remote working has worked for the most part.

And employees at SMEs tend to agree.

As many as 78 percent of local respondents in Kaspersky’s study said that they want to “rethink pre-COVID-19 ways of working” citing various positives that have come from working remotely.

As you can see in the image above remote working has revealed several positive aspects to employees most notably saving money and being able to spend more time with family.

“We are facing a defining moment in time, and this is very exciting. It’s clear this pandemic has accelerated digital transformation and the blending of our work and homes lives. What we’re now seeing is employees using technology to own a new future, and actively taking the lead in embracing changes in pursuit of greater freedom and flexibility. Companies now have a mandate to adapt and remodel the modern workplace into something more productive, sustainable and malleable,” chief business officer at Kaspersky, Alexander Moiseev, explained in a statement.

Whether firms will allow employees to choose how they work however is an entirely different mountain to climb.

For one, security has suffered under remote work as the attack surface widened. The fact that many folks were at home also gave cybercriminals the ability to spoof emails and even enter networks thanks to lax security at home.

Work is undoubtedly going to change in the future but this requires work on both the part of the employee and employer. Cybersecurity training and awareness is more critical than ever.

What is clear is that simply going back to the way things were is not an option. People have been shown that life doesn’t have to revolve around work and perhaps employers should consider more balance as we look to the future of work.
