Department of Basic Education threatens Matrics with exam rewrites

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced yesterday that Mathematics Paper 2 had been leaked to the public hours before Matrics could sit and write it. Now the department is trying to stymie further irregularities with the threat of rewrites.

In a Twitter post the DBE highlights the following consequences for using or copying leaked papers:

  • A rewrite of the leaked paper for everyone
  • If you are caught cheating in the examinations you may be banned for up to three years from writing the matric examinations
  • If you are caught in possession of a leaked matric examination paper you may be arrested, convicted and face living your life with a criminal record, thereby jeopardizing your future.

While these are very serious consequences at the time of writing no official rewrites of Mathematics Paper 2 – or any other exams – have been announced just yet.

That may change later today, however. This morning Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga convened an urgent meeting with the Council of Education Ministers. At 12:00 local time Motshekga will then brief the media (and the public) about what was discussed in this meeting.

After such a crushing 2020 for students we have to imagine that being forced to sit for rewrites would be a massive blow to morale. Unfortunately all Matrics can do right now is focus on the original exams and wait for the DBE to announce their plans.

The 2020 matric exams are in their third week right now and will continue until 15th December. Barring any changes to the schedule results are planned to be released on 22nd January 2021.
