The Huawei P Smart 2021: Tomorrow’s phone today

2020 is almost, finally, over. As we look into 2021 and onwards you may also be in the market for a new phone as lockdown restrictions fall away and the importance of a reliable mobile device come back into focus.

Huawei, as always, has you covered with the P Smart 2021 which rolls form and function into one while offering it to South Africans at a price that’s actually sensible.

Let’s start with the form then. On our shores you can pick up the P Smart 2021 in two colour options: Blush Gold and Midnight Black. While we’re usually the basic black kind of people here have to admit that the Blush Gold has a certain appeal to it and reminds of a subtle pearl look.

Regardless of which colour you choose you’re getting a device that fits nicely in your hand at just 76.88 X 165.65 X 9.26 millimetres (width X height X depth) and weighs only 206 grams.

You may think that small size fremainsmeans lacking hardware, but that’s not the case here when it comes to function.

The screen is a vibrant 6.67 inch affair with a FHD + resolution of 2400 x 1080. It’s also an IPS panel that goes right to the edge of the phone offering the most amount of screen in the smallest form factor.

Blush Gold

To achieve this the first of many cameras here is right there in the screen and is an 8 MP shooter perfect for your selfies and the all-important video calls.

Swing things around and, aside from the great colour back panels mentioned earlier, there’s a cluster of cameras in a very neat line. “Cluster” really is the best word here as there’s four cameras on the back: a 48MP main shooter, a 8MP 120° Ultra-Wide, 2MP Depth Lens and a 2MP Macro Lens. These cameras also feature Huawei’s AI system to capture the best shots, even in low light which is usually the worst setting for phone pictures.

All of this is powered by a Kirin 710A processor, 4GB of RAM and a huge
5 000 mAh battery that supports SuperCharge.

All of the above may come as a surprise when you find out how much the Huawei P Smart 2021 costs in South Africa, and it’s not one of those bad surprises when you learn that we’re being taken for a ride for tech in this country. Right now you can grab the phone in either Blush Gold and Midnight Black for R5 999 from the Huawei store.

While that would be a great deal on its own, there’s more on offer. Aside from the boxed device, you’re also getting a 10 000 mAh power bank for free.

That’s just the hardware, because you’re also getting some bonuses when it comes to after-sales support and services. Your purchase includes 100 days of Huawei Screen Protect, meaning that should your screen break within 100 days, you can get it replaced for free with a genuine replacement and your warranty remains intact.

Last and definitely not least is 15GB of cloud storage for a year. The P Smart 2021 already comes with 128Gb of onboard storage that can be increased to 512GB with a microSD card, so this extra storage can be used to bolster that further, or provide a backup of important data should your phone be stolen or otherwise go missing.

Again here’s where to get your Huawei P Smart 2021:

  1. Huawei Store
  2. Vodacom
  3. Cell C
