Trump fires cybersecurity official in charge of protecting elections

As outgoing President Donald Trump continues to refuse to concede the 2020 US Elections citing unproven election fraud, the president has crossed a line.

That line is the firing of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director, Christopher Krebs.

What did Krebs do? Well for that we turn to the man himself, Trump.

“The recent statement by Chris Krebs on the security of the 2020 Election was highly inaccurate, in that there were massive improprieties and fraud – including dead people voting, Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, ‘glitches’ in the voting machines which changed votes from Trump to Biden, late voting, and many more. Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated as Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency,” Trump wrote in a series of tweets.

As has become the norm, these tweets both carry warnings that “This claim about election fraud is disputed”.

So what exactly did Krebs say to stoke the ire of Trump?

Simply put, Krebs reiterated that the elections were secure and that claims of fraud were unsubstantiated. This statement issued last week which called the elections “the most secure in American history” likely didn’t sit well with Trump either. As a reminder, Trump has been making unsubstantiated claims about election fraud since sources started calling the election for Joe Biden.

The president even went so far as to claim on Twitter that, “I WON THE ELECTION“, the mark of a very stable genius we’re sure you’ll agree.

To put it plainly, Trump has fired a cybersecurity director because that director refuted the president’s claims that fraud was taking place.

According to a report from The Guardian, Krebs reportedly expected to be fired last week after his agency refuted allegations of voter fraud.

But whether Krebs expected this or not, his dismissal is worrying as Trump continues his refusal to concede the elections. The outgoing president’s Twitter account has devolved into what can only be described as the ravings of a mad man as tweets containing links to dodgy websites are shared en masse.

We had hoped for a smooth transition of power but we expected things to be a bit rocky. What we never saw coming was Trump firing folks for doing a good job.
