This week, 19th November to be more precise, many South Africans who have pre-ordered the PlayStation 5 will receive their next-gen console. Once it has been unboxed, which we recently recorded a video for, it’s time to set up the PS5.
Given the size of the console, 390mm x 104mm x 260mm, and tipping the scales at 4.5kg for the Ultra HD Blu-ray optical drive version, you first need to decide where you want to put this behemoth piece of hardware.
Once that is done, the next step is the stand, which requites a little assembly depending on what orientation – vertically or horizontally – you’re wanting.
With that in mind, and having tried both stand options, here’s a quick and easy guide for how to set it up on the PlayStation 5.
The first thing to note is the the vertical option does not require any additional tools, but the vertical one (seen in the header image) does. Namely a flathead screwdriver. You can get by with a R2 or R5 coin, but we always suggest using proper tools, especially on a R12k piece of kit.
Starting with the slightly more time consuming vertical stand set up, you’re now going to need to grab the dark navy stand itself. It must be rotated to reveal a small compartment housing the screw for the stand. You’ll know you’ve rotated enough once you hear a click.
Then, you’ll need to place the PS5 on one its thinner sides (which features the power button/optical drive), or with the PS logo downwards, the choice is to you.
Next there is a small screw hole cap on the underside of the console that can easily be removed with your fingers. There is also a dedicated hole for the cap in the aforementioned compartment.
You’ll need to line up the two hooks of the stand with the portion below the vents on the back, and slot the screw into place. Tighten with the screwdriver as necessary and it should fit securely.
Flip the console onto its normal orientation, and you’re good to go.
As we noted the horizontal stand position is very simple to set up, and does not require any additional tools whatsoever.
To fit it onto the PlayStation 5, make sure the stand is back into its original position, rotating its mechanism to hide the compartment. Once again, you’ll hear a click once it is secured.
Place the console on its side again, with the vent portion/power and HMDI ports facing up.
Then, the two hooks of the of the stand will line up perfectly with the row of PlayStation button symbols on the back of the console. Each hook will line up specifically with a square icon, helping you with positioning.
Push into place and the stand should be sure.
Place the console horizontally and it is ready to start gaming.
